Cameroon modelling scoping meeting

The Cameroon modelling scoping meeting took place on 6th April 2017 in Yaounde Cameroon. The objective of the meeting, designed as a Focus Group Discussion (FGD), was to clarify entry points for project intervention to ensure alignment with Cameroon's climate objectives & socio-economic priorities as stipulated in the NDCs and National Development blue prints respectively.

Accordingly, Cameroon stakeholders had established during the Project's Steering Committee meeting, that the project's strategic focus should be the delivery of technical and political capacities in developing green agro-value chains utilizing clean energy for processing and transportation. A priority that cuts across three sectors - agriculture, energy and transport. Hence, the modelling will complement developments in these sectors by putting in place an analytical framework in the relevant line ministries to extrapolate long term impacts of carbon offset vis-a-vis socio-economic development achieved (jobs created; %GDP contributed etc) of various scenarios under the chosen strategic focus.

It was also agreed that at the project level, these modelling actions which fall under component 2 of the project, will complement what is being done under component 1, where the project is amalgamating project level priorities in agriculture & energy to maximize both socio-economic & carbon offsetting impacts.

It was further agreed that the modelling should factor in future developments as the country develops by taking into account the green diversity of Cameroon. This is to be achieved by ensuring all project level priorities in terms of crop value chains in the 5 agro-ecological zones of the country are integrated into the models coupled with the diverse off-grid project level energy options available to Cameroon - specifically solar, wind and micro-hydro.

Stakeholders also reiterated that the project capacity building actions need to be demand driven and build on progress already established by Cameroon. Accordingly, the modelling exercise will build on technical & institutional modelling expertise and progress already established under the GHG inventory systems of Cameroon.
